About

I am a Professor of Linguistics and Chair of the Department of Chicano Studies, Languages, and Linguistics at the University of Texas at El Paso. My work brings together academic leadership, research on bilingualism, and a commitment to the public value of higher education.

Originally from Alma, a French-speaking town in Québec, Canada, I earned my Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition at the University of Hawai‘i. Before joining UTEP, I earned tenure and promotion to full professor at the University of Kansas. My research examines how bilinguals perceive speech and recognize spoken words. I also serve as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Bilingualism: Language and Cognition and Co-Director of Bilingualism Matters @ El Paso.

As an academic leader, I value thoughtful consultation, transparent decisions, and investment in people. I work with faculty and staff to build strong academic programs, support scholarship, and connect students’ education with opportunities beyond the university.

Outside work, I enjoy cycling, running, swimming, and training for triathlons.
